"Hip-Hop on a higher level" This is the motto of XXL Magazine. Founded in 1997 and published by Townsquare Media, XXL is an American hip hop magazine who’s first issue featured a double cover of rappers Jay-Z and Master P. XXL has released many special projects such as mix-tapes, exclusive DVDs, and tour programs. Their website provides daily hip hop news and content from their magazine. In 2007, XXL began releasing an Annual Freshman List.
Each year (save for 2008) launches an issue that features the ten picks of whom to keep an eye on amongst new or upcoming rappers that are not yet widely known but show great promise. The Freshman Class list has become a much discussed and anticipated issue as it has been accredited with giving many now known artists their first taste of fame. Some big rap stars who’ve received highlights early in their career via XXL Magazine include Mac Miller, J. Cole, Kendrick Lamar, Big Sean, and Chance The Rapper.
